A fun read for all.
Hugo Pepper by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
This is a cross between Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians and a young Harry Potter. Hugo Pepper is a wonderful story for someone starting out with chapter books. Each chapter is only a few pages with simple graphics throughout making it ideal book for bedtime.
The story is about young Hugo raised by reindeer herders. Ask yourself this, where do reindeer headers keep their hair? Who was Brimstone Kate and why did she need a bigger bed and what happened next? Did you know that cloud sheep are no bigger than guinea pigs, they graze on blue grass and their wool is used for flying carpets.
But back to Hugo, one day he discovers a snow chariot and learns that Harvi and Sarvi Runter-Tun-Tun are not his real parents. So he climbs into the snow chariot, pushes the lever to start and sets off to discover where home is.
Like Alice down the rabbit-hole Hugo meets many new friends like the Neptune sisters Daisy and Lily, who are …well, you will have to read the story to find out who they are. These new friends welcome Hugo as the long-lost son of Phineas and Phyllida Pepper who once travelled to far-flung places collecting stories that were published in a magazine called The Firefly Quarterly. After his parents disappearance the magazine fell into the hands of a mean-spirited Elliot de Mille and it’s up to Hugo and some special friends, to put things right but can they do it? Read the story and discover the answer for yourself.
