The week beginning 3rd December 1934 - Michael Savage speaks in Marton.

The work diary of Harold Richardson, County Clerk, Rangitikei County Council:

 

Harold Hastings Richardson, 1872-1944 was appointed County Clerk in 1893, and he continued in that role until his death, 51 years later.

 

 

Monday, 3 December 1934

 

Mair* in, also Dukeson* and Webb and Stokes.  Went into matter [of] their contract and arranged payment of wages. 

 

Fowler in office. 

 

Office in evening.  H J Gould, Surveyor, called in re plan [of] Bruce Road. 

 

Miss Oldfield back at office but has to return to hospital. 

 

Lesley Jones sent in application for position of Assistant Clerk.  Pahiatua gave him a testimonial.

 

Mair advised that the Committee of Council decided to recommend the acceptance of M & C Reynolds’ tender for sealing Bulls Turakina Main Highway. 

 

 

Tuesday, 4 December 1934

Wednesday, 5 December 1934

 

Went to school function in afternoon and officially opened same. 

 

Later went [to] Whangaehu Village.  Heavy rain there but none in Marton.

Friday, 7 December 1934

 

Brown and Miss Oldfield busy with 12½% rebate. 

 

{……Chief Clerk called re 12½% rebate and other matters.

 

Hutton, Pahiatua, rang re Leslie & Kento.

 

Not at office in evening. 

 

Mr Savage, Labour leader, spoke in Town Hall in evening.  Went to hear him. 

 

 

Saturday, 8 December 1934

 

Fine but windy.

 

Dukeson in, also Fowler.

 

Wrote [to] Mair re Bulls Bridge signs. 

 

Unemployment day.  Busy with camp vouchers. 

 

Office closed in afternoon. 

 

Office in evening. 

 

Rang chairman.

*Sydney Mair was County Engineer, retiring 1947.  He began his employment with the County in 1899. 

*F J Fowler was the County’s Traffic Inspector

*Richard Dukeson was the County’s Overseer in the Southern part of the District

*A V Brown was Assistant County Clerk.
